How are you handling redlines / markups?

Question

I’ve been having a few conversations lately about redlines and markups in InEight Document and realized there’s probably a wide range of approaches out there.

At our end, it’s a bit of a mix. Some teams are still very Bluebeam-heavy, others are starting to use more of what’s available in the native viewer.

Curious what others are doing in practice:

* Are you doing markups directly in InEight, or still handling them outside the system?
* If you are using InEight, are you mostly using Bluebeam or the built-in markup tools?
* Do you have subcontractors in there doing markups as well, or is that kept internal?
* Are you putting any structure around it with workflows, or keeping it fairly loose?
* How are you managing redlines across revisions?

Just trying to get a sense of what’s actually working for people, what’s practical, what’s not.

Would be especially interested to hear if anyone has moved away from Bluebeam, or if most are still running both side by side.

I think depends if you want the markups to automatically transfer to the new rev. Risk/benefit, you want to ensure you are double checking the drawings to include information replaced into the new rev as opposed to doing a markup.  The InEight viewer does have the ability to automatically transfer the markups to the new rev, however the markup tools are limited compared to Bluebeam (although InEight has added quite a bit of functionality in the last year or so, such as ability to create your own markup tools and save, dynamic stamps, and the ability to filter by markup - simulating "layers" , as well as the ability to turn markups on/off).  Outside of testing we have not used this too much on live projects yet and would love feedback from users who are.

In terms of workflow, we do see projects manually managing redlines/markups with a metadata status field as opposed to automated workflows,  and that seems to be working quite well.

I use the Bluebeam integration to add markups. Like the person above mentioned, I prefer the Bluebeam features vs the built-in tools.

Adding markups to new revs is tedious to the point that I wonder if I am missing something. I have a "workflow" of my own but adding a formal one might be helpful to ensure that nothing gets missed. Usually this involves downloading the old revs with all markups, upload new revs, then go in and copy all markups that are still relevant from the old rev to the new.

If only few drawings, I do the transfer of redlines. When faced with hundreds of revised drawings, I make sure to coordinate with our PCs and QC team. This is particularly important for placing the weld maps back into the new drawings. I know this can be somewhat of a hassle.

I'm unsure how ready the built-in feature is like for layering markups or if it has a 'Tool Chest' option like in Bluebeam, etc. Furthermore, the Bluebeam Integration is open, easier to open files.

I am also intrigued if we have a streamlined approach we can take.
