What is one habit or practice that's saved you from a project being in danger of budget overruns?
I agree with the other comments about KPI's, change management and scope. Along with knowing your scope is knowing what falls into the category of SCOPE CREEP. Managing the potential cost and schedule impact to avoid or limit SCOPE CREEP is key to staying on budget/schedule and maintaining a good relations with the client.
Good points…knowing scope to identify when changes occur in your change management process, field walks for verification, daily/weekly report reviews with crews, including schedule, to identify issues early and actionable items to eliminate or, at least, mitigate impacts.
Great points, I do heavy civil mostly where the scope is key, and KPI's are crucial in order to communicate clearly and get performance data.
I would like to add a good schedule as the basics though, and a good clear CBS (and a tight leash on the designers 😁)
Scope verification: involves more than just reviewing contract documents, it requires regular site visits to ensure that the work being executed aligns with the agreed scope.
KPIs: serve as early warning signals, helping project managers identify activities that require immediate attention due to potential delays or cost overruns
