Hi there, I'm Robyn Hall, Content Strategist here at InEight. Over the next eight weeks I'm excited to share a new content series we’re calling the Inside the Capital Project Content Series (ITCPS).
Each week I’ll dig into a different challenge in complex capital projects and share what I’ve uncovered through my research. The goal: to provide a few “aha” moments, some fresh perspectives, and hopefully some good conversation and takeaway for those close to the work.
For week 1 I wanted to start on the topic of Scope, more specifically how it can cause budget overruns.
Scope is always evolving and it touches a lot of stakeholders who need to hear about it in time to react, so without defined parameters and a process for capturing changes as they happen it's hard to say what a project will really cost or how long it will take.
I think a lot of it comes down to whether communication reaches every discipline at once, and when it doesn’t, a scope change is already affecting cost and schedule. The full article gets into the specifics.
Question for the Community: What scope control strategies have worked best for your team, and what actually triggers a budget update when scope changes?
