Whether you’re building the report or reviewing it, what do you find to be the most valuable metric you track and why?
From my experience, the value of SPI and CPI depends heavily on how the schedule was resource-loaded, especially since Primavera is typically the source of earned value data. I tend to rely more on SPI, as it provides a clearer picture of schedule performance. Cost, on the other hand, can be calculated using various methods and data sources beyond Primavera, which can introduce inconsistencies in CPI unless the cost tracking is tightly integrated.
I don't know if I could pick just 1! For me personally, it is PF (productivity / performance factor) and I also agree with using SPI or Schedule variance metric. It is a really important to make sure you are on budget AND schedule. If your PF is great, yet you are behind schedule, you aren't really doing that well are you? Guess that could also depend on whether you are on a cost driven job or schedule driven job as well ;).
On a weekly basis and for "field" facing reports, the productivity factor is the go to metric to review and analyze with our field crews to identify issues early in the activities to give enough runway for correction. On a monthly basis and for end of month reporting the CPI can be used to review with the project management teams for updates and again, identify potential issues.
I instinctively didn’t want to answer this😐️, as very few projects are alike, but you got me thinking, and there’s one metric I always use. Regardless of the project, I track a modified SPI. To keep things clear and simple, I split the SPI into percent complete and planned percent complete. With a good CBS, it’s easy to identify where performance is lagging, and it’s a straightforward metric to communicate: ‘We’re behind here, and we’re going to mitigate it with this.’
