I wanted to pose a question and see if there’s interest (or an existing roadmap item) around a potential enhancement to CBS / WBS creation.
Would InEight consider a feature that allows users to create a CBS or WBS structure driven entirely by tag or metadata fields?
More specifically, the idea would be:
- Use one or more tags / metadata fields (e.g., Discipline, Area, System, CWP, Phase, etc.) as the basis for automatically generating a hierarchical CBS or WBS
- Allow combinations and ordering of those fields to define the hierarchy (similar to pivoting data)
- Save that structure as a reusable template or profile
- Optionally use that same saved structure as the CBS pushed from Estimate into InEight Control, ensuring alignment from estimating through execution
This could potentially:
- Reduce manual CBS/WBS setup and rework
- Improve consistency across estimates, projects, and handovers
- Allow teams to maintain a single “source of truth” for structural logic while still leveraging flexible tags
- Make it easier to support multiple reporting or execution views without duplicating structures
I’m curious:
- Is anything like this already available or planned?
- Would others see value in metadata-driven CBS/WBS generation?
- Are there technical or data-governance constraints that would make this difficult to implement?
Looking forward to hearing how others are handling this today and whether this aligns with broader use cases in the community.
